The Land Between Two Cities

Hello  Everyone.  This  is  a  poem  I  wrote  back  in  2005.  It  was  released  in  April  of  that  year.  It  tells  a  story  of  a  people  who  flee  a  tyrannic  country  to  make  their  way  to  America.  The  two  cities  mentioned  are  New  York  City  and  San  Francisco.  Before  air  travel,  most  people  came  to  America  by  either  New  York  City  on  the  Atlantic  Coast  or  San  Francisco  on  the  Pacific  Coast.  The  poem  won  an  Editor’s  Choice  Award  from  poetry.com.  For  many  people,  this  poem  hit  home.  I  hope  that  it  hits  home  with  you  as  well.

The Land Between Two Cities

Once upon a time there was a man.

He wanted to do everything he can.

The place where he wanted to go

Was to the land between New York City and San Francisco.

He was from a very barren land.

He was constantly beaten with the back of a hand.

He hoped that he would one day go

To the land between New York City and San Francisco.

He wanted his fellow people to see

How good it would feel to be free.

He was determined to let all the people know

That you are free in the land between New York City and San Francisco.

The leader of this land came to the people and said,

“Listen not to this man.  He just wants to take away your bread.

You do not want to go

To the land between New York City and San Francisco.

As long as I rule over you

I will always tell you what to do.

I do not want you to know

About the land between New York City and San Francisco.

I will make you work without any rest.

You will say that my way is best.

You will say that freedom is not good for you, so

Nor is the land between New York City and San Francisco.

Now you must see

That you only please me

And I will not let you go

To the land between New York City and San Francisco.”

The people said, “Do you not see?

We want to be free.

We want to go

And see the land between New York City and San Francisco.”

The leader of the land said, “You will breathe your last breath

As we beat each one of you to death.

You will never be free to go

To the land between New York City and San Francisco.”

The people would rebel and begin to fight

A man said, “This could go into the night.

We will disobey you and go

To the land between New York City and San Francisco.

You are foolish and blind to see

That all people of the world wish to be free

And that is why millions of people want to go

To that land between New York City and San Francisco.

You fool!  It is a great and fertile sod

That was established by the Almighty God.

The Almighty God will come to overthrow

The enemy of the land between New York City and San Francisco.

The Almighty God is more powerful than you can see

But he chooses that all people on earth be free.

That is the thing that the forefathers had to know,

The ones who established the land between New York City and San Francisco.

Surrender yourself to the Almighty God

For he rules mightily with a lightning rod

And you will watch your life grow

As if you were in the land between New York City and San Francisco.

You yourselves will never rust

As long as ‘In God You Trust’

Do this, and see the show

That lovers of God created in the land between New York City and San Francisco.”

The leader was very angry and he said,

“Because you worship God, you all will be dead

Because God is nothing compared to me and so

For because of this God I will destroy the land between New York City and San Francisco.”

With those words there was a great quake

That made all things about that land shake

A voice from above said, “Let the people go

To the land between New York City and San Francisco.”

From that point on, the people did say,

“We are no longer under corrupt rule today

For the Almighty God commanded us to go

To the land between New York City and San Francisco.”

The people celebrated in the street

As the leaders of the land suffered defeat

And the people began to go

To the land between New York City and San Francisco.

Weeks later they were sitting on the porch

Looking at a lovely lady holding up a torch

With her welcome, these words they all would know:

“Welcome to the land between New York City and San Francisco.”

We as the people in this land must see

That the freedom we have is not free

We must see to it that we never let it go

Away from the land between New York City and San Francisco.

From a woman in the east and a golden gate in the west

The people who live here will say that this land is the best

We must always remember, and do not let anyone overthrow

The God established principles that made up this land between New York City and San Francisco.

From Grand Isle, Maine to Border Field State Park, California.

From Tatoosh Island, Washington to Key Largo, Florida.

From Angle Inlet, Minnesota to Brownsville, Texas.

Plus Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, Virgin Islands, and all of the territories.

May this land between New York City and San Francisco bless God.
